Roofing Materials: Which is Best for You?

Home Roofing Roofing Materials: Which is Best for You?

When it comes to building a strong roofing system, few things are as consequential as the materials you use, as they have a great influence on your roof’s performance, lifespan, and durability, among many other aspects. Especially if you’re a homeowner, it’s smart to be educated about the material(s) that your roof is made out of, whether it’s asphalt shingle, metal, or even rubber. In today’s blog, we’ll be taking a look at various roofing materials and analyzing their unique characteristics, including their own positives and negatives. If that sounds interesting, keep reading below for more!

Asphalt Shingle

Perhaps the most ubiquitous roofing material here in North America, asphalt shingle has been a longstanding favorite of homeowners and contractors alike for its budget-friendliness and ease of installation, among other benefits it brings to the table. Homes in nearly every neighborhood are armored with an asphalt shingle roof, and there are good reasons why it’s a widespread favorite: it is cost-effective and fits the characteristics of just about any home. Contractors are also delighted to know that installing, repairing, and/or replacing it is a relatively straightforward process.

Pros: Great value, versatile, great aesthetic appeal, suits virtually every home

Cons: Not as durable as other materials, susceptible to mold, water damage, and other threats

Metal

As one would assume, when compared to asphalt shingle, metal takes things up a notch in terms of strength and durability. Metal roofs are common to last much longer than their contemporaries and better withstand the elements, due to the simple fact that they can sustain much more damage and abuse. Though certainly not as common, metal is a great choice for homeowners who are in a particularly harsh or polarizing climate.

Pros: Much more durable than asphalt shingle, ideal for harsh or rough climates

Cons: More expensive, less easy to install, less aesthetic range than asphalt shingle

Rubber

Almost acting as a common ground between asphalt shingle and metal, rubber provides much protection without being too overbearing in price or in its installation process. One major benefit of rubber is that it has an impressively long lifespan despite it’s light weight – it is indeed one of the more deceptively strong materials.

Pros: Long-lasting, lightweight, relatively inexpensive

Cons: Not as commonly available, not known to be versatile in appearance
