Home Roofing Roofing FAQ

Being a homeowner is stressful. Part of owning your own home is maintaining it inside and out. Ignoring the maintenance that your home needs will lead to costly damages, poor energy efficiency, a lower resale value, and so many other negative outcomes. The roof of your home is something that is easy to forget about since it’s not inside the home or within your eyesight very often. Homeowners who have little experience with roofing repairs and replacements are bound to have questions, so let’s discuss some of the most common inquiries.

How Do I Know When My Roof Needs Replaced?

Knowing when your roof needs replaced isn’t simple unfortunately. There’s a lot that comes into play, including the age of your roof. If your roof is over 20 years old, it probably needs to be replaced. Other signs that your roof needs to be replaced include:

  • Curling or warped shingles
  • Missing shingles
  • Moss or algae growth
  • Excess granules coming off the existing shingles

You should inspect your roof at least once a year or hire a contractor to inspect it for you. If you’re doing the inspection yourself, be sure to take notes and mark the areas of concern so you can show your contractor.

Can My Roof Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?

Some of the signs that your roof needs to be replaced may actually be signs that your roof needs to be repaired. If your roof isn’t very old and as only minor damages to one specific area of the roof, it can probably be repaired. Roofing repairs are cheaper than a total replacement and extend the life of your existing roof. The best way to determine if your roof needs to be repaired or replaced is to have a roofing contractor perform a roof inspection. They can assess the current condition of your roof and then give you options for a repair vs a replacement with price comparisons.

How Long Will a Replacement Take?

A roof replacement timeline depends on a variety of factors. The size of your roof, the condition of the existing roof, and the type of roof you’re getting installed all impact the timeline. In general, a total roof replacement can be completed in 1-2 days. Roof replacements are best when they’re done on a warm, dry day. Summertime is ideal for a roof replacement, but most contractors can get the job done during the spring or fall too.
