At E.M. Snow, we’ve spent more than 50 years helping homeowners across Eastern Massachusetts choose exterior finishes that hold up to New England winters while still turning heads. Here’s what’s trending this year, and how to think about color when you’re planning your next exterior project.

Why Color Pairing Matters More Than Ever

A roof and a set of siding aren’t chosen in isolation anymore. Buyers and appraisers increasingly view the exterior as a single, cohesive design — which means your roof color, siding color, and trim need to work together rather than compete. A mismatched pairing (say, a cool blue-gray roof against warm tan siding) can make even a brand-new roof or siding installation look dated the moment it goes up. On the flip side, a thoughtfully coordinated palette is one of the fastest ways to boost curb appeal without touching the home’s footprint or floor plan.

The Siding Colors Homeowners Are Choosing This Year

A few clear favorites have emerged in 2026:

• Deep, earthy greens — a modern update on the classic New England colonial look that pairs beautifully with natural stone and black hardware.
• Warm greiges and “greige-adjacent” neutrals — softer and less stark than pure gray, these tones flatter both older colonials and newer builds.
• Charcoal and near-black accents — typically used on trim, shutters, or a front entryway to add contrast against a lighter primary siding color.
• Textured, low-sheen finishes — homeowners are gravitating toward siding that reads as matte rather than glossy, for a more natural, high-end look.

Durable, low-maintenance materials like James Hardie siding now come in an expanded range of factory-baked colors that hold their tone far longer than older vinyl products, which is a big part of why these deeper, richer palettes have become practical choices rather than high-maintenance risks.

Matching Your Roof Replacement to Your New Siding

If a roof replacement is also on your radar, 2026 is a good year to plan the two projects together rather than treating them as separate decisions made years apart. Warm-toned architectural shingles (think driftwood, weathered brown, or soft charcoal blends) tend to pair well with the greens and greiges trending in siding right now, while cooler slate-gray shingles complement crisper, more contemporary neutral siding schemes. Our team works with product lines like Owens Corning and CertainTeed specifically because of their wide color libraries, which makes it much easier to land on a roof-and-siding combination that feels intentional rather than accidental.

Curb Appeal Is an Investment, Not Just a Look

It’s tempting to think of exterior color as purely cosmetic, but real estate data consistently shows that updated, well-coordinated exteriors correlate with stronger offers and faster sales. For homeowners not planning to sell anytime soon, the payoff is more immediate: a home that finally looks as good on the outside as it feels on the inside. Pairing a color refresh with new windows — swapping tired white frames for black or bronze — is one of the highest-impact combinations we see, since window frame color has an outsized effect on how the whole facade reads from the street.

Choosing Colors and Materials That Last Through New England Weather

Trendy colors only matter if the materials behind them can survive a Massachusetts winter. Freeze-thaw cycles, coastal humidity, and heavy snow loads all put real stress on exterior materials, which is why we steer clients toward products engineered for this climate rather than whatever’s popular in a warmer market. Darker colors absorb more heat, which can be an asset for ice and snow shedding in winter but is worth discussing if your home gets intense summer sun. A good contractor will walk you through those trade-offs before you commit to a shade, not after the crew shows up.

Bringing Your Vision to Life with EM Snow

Choosing a color palette is exciting, but it’s only half the equation — the installation quality determines whether that palette still looks sharp in year ten, not just year one. Our crews have been installing roofing, siding, and windows throughout Waltham and the greater Boston area since 1967, and we’re happy to bring sample boards and shingle swatches right to your home so you can see how a color pairing will actually look against your landscaping, brick, and neighborhood. You can browse examples of recent projects in our photo gallery for inspiration before you start planning.

Roof Inspection

Inspecting your roofing is vital to ensuring your home stays safe for numerous years to come. Proper roofing and protection can help stop moisture, animals, and more from entering your home. To avoid these possibilities have a look at some key areas to check below.

• Check for damaged, loose, or missing shingles.
• Inspect flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents.
• Clean out any debris that may have accumulated.

Siding and Exterior Walls

Similar to roofing, healthy siding creates a perfect seal that doesn’t allow the harsh elements of the outdoors to enter your home. Siding and roofing are essential to helping your home last for numerous years.

• Inspect siding for cracks, rot, or other damage.
• Clean siding to remove dirt, mold, and mildew.
• Seal any gaps around windows and doors to prevent drafts.

Windows and Doors

Windows and doors are perfect to check when looking at siding, they both help to keep your home insulated whilst also helping you save money on your heating bill throughout the colder months.

• Check to weatherstrip and replace if worn.
• Ensure caulking around windows and doors is intact.
• Clean windows to allow more sunlight in during winter.

Gutters and Downspouts

Without proper gutters or downspouts, water will begin to flood the side of your home and cause a tremendous amount of damage over time. Water may seem harmless but can deteriorate all kinds of materials extremely fast, making it essential to control your home’s water displacement.

• Clear leaves and debris from gutters to prevent clogging.
• Ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation.
• Consider adding gutter guards to minimize future maintenance.

Decks, Patios, and Porches

If you want your deck, porch, or patio to last throughout the winter then it’s important to check all the listed aspects below to ensure no damage is caused to your home.

• Inspect for loose boards, nails, or railings.
• Clean and seal wood decks to protect against moisture damage.
• Remove any leaves or debris that can cause slipping hazards.
