If there’s one thing about us here at E.M. Snow, it’s that we know siding. Proudly serving Waltham, MA, and the greater Boston area, we strive to live up to our name as “The Siding Company”. While our commitment to quality remains the same, the materials we use can change on a random basis – such materials can include James Hardie Fiber Cement siding or CertainTeed Vinyl siding, for example. Whatever homeowners are looking to get out of their siding, there are a number of materials out there to choose from, each with its own qualities and characteristics. In today’s blog, we’ll be taking a look at the most popular siding materials among homeowners in the country. Learn more below!
Stucco
According to the American Institute of Building Design, and data from the US Census Bureau, stucco reigns supreme among siding materials and can be seen in 27% of American single-family homes. In its appearance, stucco siding looks distinctively European – deriving from that of Spanish and Mediterranean cultures. As for the material itself, stucco is comprised of Portland cement, lime, sand, and water, and is typically as strong as it looks, brushing aside harsh weather conditions with ease. Stucco is most often seen in areas throughout the United States with warmer climates, such as Flordia and Southern California.
Vinyl Siding
An extremely close runner-up to stucco siding, vinyl siding is the second most popular siding material, and can be found on 26% of American homes. Vinyl siding is a staple of American architecture and culture as a whole, and enjoys lasting popularity due to its value, ease of installation, and versatility. Offered by most siding contractors across the nation (including us here at E.M. Snow), vinyl siding allows homeowners a plethora of different styles and hues they can choose from. It is unlikely that you won’t find a style of vinyl siding to match the character of your home!
Fiber Cement
Arriving in third place is fiber cement siding, which was found on 22% of American homes in 2021. Represented in products such as James Hardie’s HardiePlank line, fiber cement siding is unique in both its appearance and its characteristics. You’ll know fiber cement siding when you see it, as its distinct, woodlike appearance adds instant elegance and class to any home that its featured on.
